@begiantca: Why are there so many ticks in Canada? Reports of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses are skyrocketing: in 2010, there were 143 recorded cases of Lyme disease in Canada; in 2025, there were 7,105. So why are the numbers of ticks increasing? Biology professor Vett Lloyd from Mount Allison University explained there are a few factors at play: the changing climate, warmer winters and changes in land use all play a role. Canadian winters used to keep the population down. But now, they're surviving the milder winters and the warmer weather year-round is more welcoming. Suburban development is also creating more green areas that appeal to wild rodents like mice and raccoons, which are also common tick carriers. To protect yourself, look for bug sprays with picaridin, wear light-coloured clothing so ticks are easier to identify and check yourself for ticks after you return inside. #ticks #borrelia #lymedisease

I grew-up in Saskatchewan, 60’s and 70’s. Played all year round in 2 large fields, grasses, bushes and trees. Never even saw a tick. Last summer I simply walked through those same fields, once: 5 ticks.
