Bank Teller here…I understand your frustration with that question because it most definitely is YOUR money…however, you would be AMAZED at the amount of scams we see and our first priority is protecting our customer. We don’t ask to be nosy, we ask because we care. Once the money is gone, there is no getting it back. Plus, we are only allowed to keep so much money on hand. That is for the security of the bank employees.

Former bank employee here. Usually if you want more than $10k you have to request it a couple days before. It’s a security risk to have more than $20k in the vaults. Relax guy these rules have been around for the last 40 years lol

As a bank teller, we have to order money, so they are lower then normal. Also, the feds makes us ask what you’re using your money for. We don’t honestly care…but it’s our job…

Former branch manager, now bank executive here. Branches do not carry nearly as much cash as people think, for multiple reasons. Regarding being asked what you’re using the money for, this is to protect both you and the bank from potential loss due to the myriad of scams that exist.

Sorry that we ask you to protect your money because there are so many scams going on right now!! It's also wild to me that people think we keep cash in our vaults like they do in the movies. That's not how it works. We have limits and also restrictions and guidelines. Why be rude to the teller? Just answer the questions and go about your day. 🙄

Former banker…for security reasons, banks have to limit how much they have in the branch. For anything over $10,000, they usually have to order up, unless they have received an unexpected large cash deposit. You can’t expect a retailer to have an unlimited supply of everything they carry, it’s not feasible. If you give them a little notice, they can usually make it happen for you.
