@cindydoedee: my first time making yogurt. against all odds, it worked! Day 80 of boycotting conventional grocery stores: I decided to tackle my number one most consumed product: yogurt. As a dairy consumer, my boycott has led me to think more critically about the dairy industry: - The U.S. lost ~70% of its family-scale commercial dairies between 1997 and 2017. Today, only ~30 percent of all U.S. milk is produced on family-scale farms. - 83% of milk sales are dominated by 3 dairy "cooperatives" (the DFA, Land O’ Lakes, and California Dairies, Inc.). - From 1990-2020, the shift to larger operations resulted in a doubling of annual methane emissions from dairy manure management, despite the fact that the number of cows remained the same. "Nearly every sector of the food system has undergone rapid consolidation in recent decades. Consolidation. in the dairy sector, however, is occurring even more rapidly. Consolidation is happening both at the farm level (fewer farms raising more cows) and at the processing level (fewer but larger corporations and cooperatives that purchase, process, and market dairy products)." (Food & Water Watch, 2023) Why am I boycotting grocery stores? TLDR (you can see my previous posts); 1. To be closer to my food source 2) support local 3) reduce plastic. I'll still have to source my milk to make yogurt but in my experience it's easier to find plastic-free milk than yogurt. If you have any local milk recommendations please let me know! #yogurt #boycottinggrocerystores #dairy #makingyogurt
