I mean, women gravitated to teaching because it was one of the few jobs they were actually allowed to do historically? so even the implication of all his English teachers being women kind of carries its own misogyny. Or am I reading too much into this?

It's not blame, it's empowerment. The English teachers that uphold those grammar rules are mostly women, collectively what they teach determines the future of the English grammar rules. They have agency, they have collective bargaining, they have authority. It's within their collective power to stop stigmatizing filler words.
