The term "Canadian tuxedo" started in 1951 when American crooner Bing Crosby was denied check-in at the upscale Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, Canada, because he was wearing casual denim. In response, Levi Strauss & Co. designed him a custom tuxedo made completely out of jeans material.

The term Canadian Tuxedo comes from a situation where Bing Crosby was wearing a denim jacket and jeans while trying to check into an upscale Canadian hotel. I think in British Columbia. Levi’s found out about it and made an actual full denim tux which they presented to him as a little marketing stunt. I think that makes the “traditional” Canadian tuxedo just a matching jacket and jeans, but I say there is room to innovate

I've lived in three provinces, it's not really a thing to wear it. it just kind of happens sometimes that you're wearing jeans, and then you add a jean jacket. we happily own it though

Canadian tuxedo is denim on denim on denim, almost always blue, i’ve usually seen darker blue denim pants and jacket, and a lighter denim shirt

As a Canadian generally if you're calling it a Canadian Tuxedo it'll be matching or close to the same wash. But also do what you like I'm not your real dad. With a denim shirt and jacket is extra, not needed but appreciated. We like it, its not that serious it's just a neat fun thing.

Seizing a PR opportunity, Levi's created a custom denim tuxedo jacket for him. After the hotel clerk turned Crosby away, Levi's gifted him a bespoke tuxedo made from their classic 501 material. The jacket featured a leather patch inside that stated it was perfectly appropriate fabric and anyone wearing it should be allowed entrance to the finest hotels.
