Sensory overload (too much noise, light, touch, or activity) 2. Difficulty communicating needs, pain, fear, or frustration 3. Anxiety or overwhelming emotions 4. Physical discomfort, illness, or pain that the child cannot express 5. A need for sensory input or regulation Every autistic child is different, and the reason behind the behaviour can vary from one situation to another. Instead of asking, 'How do we stop this behaviour?' it can be more helpful to ask, 'What is this child trying to communicate?' Responding with patience, understanding, and support can help the child feel safe while caregivers work to identify and address the underlying cause. Behind every behaviour is a need. When we understand the need, we can better support the child. Has your child ever: * Hit or banged their head? * Bit themselves or others? * Scratched, pinched, or slapped themselves? * Thrown or broken household items? * Smashed TVs, tablets, windows, or walls? * Hurt siblings or caregivers during a meltdown?
