It starts when metal salt crystals are dropped into sodium silicate solution, also known as water glass. As soon as the crystals touch the liquid, they begin to dissolve and react with the silicate around them. A thin, almost invisible membrane forms around each crystal. But this membrane is not fully solid. Water can still move through it. Because the doncentration inside the membrane is different from the liquid outside, water gets pulled inward by osmosis. That builds pressure inside. Eventually, the membrane ruptures - and the dissolved metal salt solution pushes upward into the surrounding sodium silicate. As soon as it touches the silicate again, a new solid mineral wall forms. This repeats again and again. Membrane forms. Pressure builds. It bursts. A new tube grows. That's why these structures rise upward like underwater plants or coral. But they are not alive they are hollow mineral tubes created by a real chemical reaction.
