Part of the “Spirit of the Game” is that you don’t end the game if one of teams is actively on an attack. Once the time has expired, if there is an attack ongoing, or a corner about to be taken, the ref won’t blow the whistle until the attack ends (either the keeper gets the ball, or the ball gets cleared out of the attacking third of the field).

it's not a secret dude! you can estimate how much time is left, it's not that hard, just keep track of stoppage time and the allowed extended time.

The part that I’m not sure if I like or dislike is also that for extra time the ref just gets to decide if they keep going on or not based on vibes

The MLS tried this when it 1st started play in the 90s. It felt awkward and forced, not keeping with the natural flow of the game. Teams seemed to become more focused on clock management and defense. To be clear, I was in favor of this when it was introduced, but it just didnt work.

This is a bad take for me. Real fans can very very accurately guess how much stoppage time will be added. It’s really simple and not an issue if you actually watch the sport

You said football is the only sport in the world that hasn't a set end by time or action then names 3 American sports. No-one knows how long a tennis game is going to last but doesn't complain. It could be 2 hours or 5. Just let this one go.

We know how much added time there is? Like they hold up a sign and show it on the TV, it is quite literally not a secret? The ref just doesn’t end the game if there’s a potential scoring chance

You can’t add a stop clock to football/soccer unless you reduce the length of the match, because in reality the ball is only in play for 45-60 mins. So adding a stop clock would make the matches involve 30 minutes more exercise for the players which would make the issue of overworking worse

its okay for us north Americans to not truly understand why and how added time is put on. but that's the way the game has been played forever, and if people just pay a little attention to the run of play you'll understand exactly how much time will be added and why they that decision was made.

Weird take...the sport's clock is fine and changing it would cause problems. You take a free kick, but seconds later it gets called back (any reason). Do you reset back to where you were, stop it again? Do you start at kick, or when the ball is placed, or step back? What about situations where the team takes the kick/throw in immediately? The stop clock sounds nice in a vacuum coming from other sports but soccer is free flowing and this wouldn't work like it does in hockey.

agree...and what about the fake injuries...and what about the "penalty kicks" to decide an important game decision and what about the fact that most games only likely see a maximum of 8 to 10 shots on net between BOTH sides and about 85 minutes spent at the middle of the field the players passing back and forth and back again....what a "beautiful" game!

In the Portugal vs Spain game that just ended there was 6 min of stoppage time and the ref let it go until almost 99 min it was crazy

The only way to do it realistically would be to shorten the game time, as the ball is actually out of play a lot longer than you think, it’s generally only ‘in play’ for 55 to 60 minutes per game. So we’d end up with 60 minute game times that would last about 90 minutes.

We are talking about few minutes like 5 to 6 average is truly not a big deal. American fútbol goes forever and keeps stopping every 2 seconds hence rarely played outside America

Hard disagree. Firstly, it's not that hard to track the timing if you care, and if you don't it doesn't matter, so if you can't that's on you (or possibly your nation's education system). Secondly I'd much rather have the ref, and expert in the game, have more control of the ending because they have the knowledge to keep it going if something might be about to change, or wrap it up if we're just wasting time. I wish the system were more widely adopted, and even more flexible.
