@madigummybears: My (almost) year in my job has taught me valuable skills, confidence, and communication. Ur reminder not to shoot for what your heart/brain are telling you & not to listen to insecurities or the opinion of every burnt out bedside nurse. 😄 #nursing #icunursing #icu #newgrad #newgradnurses
As a girl in medsurg with dreams of going to icu, its soooo hard to make that switch if u start in another specialty. If u are able to get into icu as a new grad, DO IT

I would ask to “shadow” for a shift. Then during that time jump in and do as much as you can including answering call lights, helping with baths, etc. this will show the team you are a team player! After wards you can truly tell the manager how passionate you are about critical care nursing and to call you if an internal position opens up!😎

Idk lol started as a new grad in ICU this year and kinda wish I started on pcu/imcu. However, I will say the caveat to this is that started in a hospital that didn’t offer a good orientation. My recommendation find a critical care pathway residency that will give you 6-8 wks on pcu and then 4mo on ICU.

Exactlyyyy!!!!! No matter what floor you’re on or what speciality you’re in, your first time doing something is going to be your first time. Never understood that mentality 🫠 you’re going to learn it either way!!

Plus, everything after that is going to seem easy comparatively. You can go anywhere with that kind of experience!

I started in the ICU 26 years ago. I’ve precepted many new new grads in the unit who did very well. It’s more about desire, aptitude and personality than experience. On the flip side I’ve precepted nurses with 10 years of med surg experience who just weren’t cut out for ICU or critical care nursing for that matter. That’s my experience anyway

I wanted to go L&D as well but I started in icu as a new grad. I’m going on 3 years in icu and I wouldn’t change it for anything! I’ve gained so much knowledge and confidence that I know when it’s time to move on, I’ll be ready 🩷

Idk yall, starting in an ICU as a new grad is a huge liability. You still don’t have the foundational skills and skill set that you grow overtime as a nurse. To each there own, also many level 1 trauma centers especially in nyc won’t hire until someone has years of experience. My bf had to work at the same facility for upwards of 3 years before they even offered an interview

Did you have any additional certifications that helped you get into the icu and did you do a residency?
