@compathent: T-Pain explains why labels don’t always let artists walk away. 💼 After paying a huge advance, labels expect to recoup that investment. If the money hasn’t been earned back, leaving isn’t always simple. Learn the music business before you sign anything. 🎯 #musicbusiness #independentartist #musicmarketing #tpain
Wow record labels give artist a loan ???? So the money rappers be flexing is loan money from the label ???!

It’s worse than a loan, it’s a predatory cash advance payday loan with ♾️/TBD interest rates. 🙃

I think it's predatory when they're not honest to the artist and then charge more on top of the original loan

The big difference between Roc Nation and Young Money. Jay Z was strategic with ownership and distribution. Lil Wayne sold the entire Young Money catalog to Universal Music Group for $100 million which is why Drake and Nicki don’t have their masters for most of their discographies.

An advance is not a loan. An advance is money the label gives you in advance…that’s why it’s called an advance. The label won’t pay you while you make money because they already gave it to you…in advance. It’s not that you’re paying them back, it’s that they already gave you the money you would’ve earned anyway…IN ADVANCE

The record label acts as your bank. It’s better to go independent. It’s harder, more challenging but you keep most of the money in your pocket and you see the business side and you start to figure out how the label was getting over on folks

The logic behind this is poor. The ten million is sunk cost so it’s irrelevant to the decision to exit the contract. The money the is owed doesn’t exist absent the artist so shelving the artist guarantees no money. It’s about controlling the next artist.

Publishers for books is the same way... They give you an advance to cover your costs so you can sit down and write your book instead of working 2 jobs. This isn't just a music industry thing, this is how commissions work.
