We still don’t have a high speed mag lev trains in America >:/ talk to me about “capitalism being good for innovation” when this country installs a high speed mag lev railway system.

As a Chinese person, let me say something about this matter. Capitalism can indeed bring innovation, but it also leads to monopolies. Once monopolies form, no one innovates anymore, because they realize that monopolies are more profitable. So our approach is: let a socialist government manage capitalism, and prevent oligarchs from interfering in politics.

The huge thing is, I think it did, but not anymore, like Marx said it was an essential step but a system change is long overdue atp

You talk like this because your privileged. Go live in a communist country like Cuba for a year and you'll actually see how it's like for yourself. Be glad you live in the US as others have it much worse than you do.

Capitalism encourages risk adverse behavior. IE; only making SUVs that look just like every other SUV that is currently selling decently

capitalism produces profit, any innovation capitalism produces can only be in service of profit. sometimes that innovation is stuff like iphones, sometimes it's new and exciting forms of finacial manipulation and fraud (eg Enron, crypto coin schemes, private equity bust-outs)

Ok USA doesn't represent capitalism as a whole, Japan for example is full of high speed rail and they are capitalist. An individual decision from the government doesn't determine the whole system.

Capitalism does cause innovation, but only on one axis. Revenue capture.

Large corporations will buy up small upstart companies with innovations that will destroy their revenue stream but be better for the consumer and then bury the technology and continue to reap profits. Capitalism only innovates when it is in service of ever increasing profits!

Also, any innovation that actually helps people live their lives inexpensively will be crushed or bought and wiped out under capitalism. So it actually undermines innovation and prevents any creativity that is not violently profitable.

The Tucker automobile. American inventors created cars that could get well over 50 mpg decades ago, but the oil companies killed them all. That said, about food additives—European countries allow additives that WE don’t. 🤷🏼‍♀️

i don't think capitalism is responsible for any innovation unless you count new ways to make peoples lives worse

The high-speed rail thing really goes to show that billionaires and people who own shit aren’t intelligent. You would make more money charging a fee or subscription plan based on individual and families raking in more money because more people would travel due to the fact that the airlines have priced out people

my own little example of this: we wanted to buy a powered intake register fan to help ventilate a room, and it's an inch off of standard sizing and we couldn't find a SINGLE OPTION that worked for us. If we can't even have more than one size vent fan then imagine how little variation is allowed everywhere else?

(I may be suggesting that this is a bad example, but nothing I say can disprove the point, it doesn't make her point false.) as an engineer I will tell you that titanium bolts are used in industry, especially under acidic conditions. well I don't know if any titanium bolts are used in any of the US military, a single titanium bolt should cost like $18 ten years ago. so the price of $25 for a single bolt can easily make sense.
