Conquering and holding land is expensive, and no one would have wanted that to be a priority after a costly war. Old colonial powers gave up their colonies after the war partly because it was cheaper to just buy goods from them instead of having military control.

1. US Army by 1945 was rapidly reducing in size because no one wants to fight anymore. USSR was experiencing similar reduction but much slower. That is why Operation Unthinkable was about rearming the Heer, because not enough Americans wanted to fight. 2. The US had maybe 4-5 partially assembled bombs, none of which were in deployable condition. The only reason the bomb was able to be dropped was because Japan's air force was thoroughly beaten. Hiroshima's local defense didn't even bother raising air alert in the city that day. The USSR had the world's strongest Army and a more than competent air force, there is a reason the Allied had to give up half of Europe to the USSR, they did not want to fight them.

I’ll put it this way Jason, the disparity between Japan and the United States was so large, ie the gap in power between Japan and the United States it was the largest disparity between great powers in human history. We had 16 million men under arms. The Soviets by the end of the war had about 9 million. We had an airforce of over 150k planes. Our navy was larger than the combined navies of the world. And we were the only ones with nukes

Some people forget that the USA was allied with USSR, Great Britain and had decided before the end of the war that they, along with China and France would rule the world through the UN Security Council. Sure, the US was the major contributor but couldn’t have won the war on their own…….even the Manhattan Project wasn’t just Americans working on it.

America had no operational nukes after WW2. And the main goal of empires is extraction not annexation. Annexing land is actually very expensive, but it used to be the most effective way to extract resources
