@healingbythenumbers_: A judge believed me. And for a minute, I thought the hard part of protecting myself was over. Then I reached the last page of the paperwork. 🫶 Follow along for parts 2 and 3 this week ‼️ OR full story on Youtube now (link in stories and bio). #DomesticViolenceAwareness #AbuseRecovery #dontgoback #PersonalProtectionOrder #igotwine
It should never be up to the victim to figure out how a protection order is getting served.

You mean that in the US, the government doesn't serve protection orders directly to the relevant parties? Thats wild.

You hire a private process server to track them down. The best ones can be found on the NAPPS directory in every state. National Association of Professional Process Servers.

Were you able to get the sheriff to do it? That’s the process near me. It costs like $20 I think

I'm surprised that that's your responsibility. I would have assumed it would be part of the court putting the order through.

Wow, you yourself need to serve it? Here, everyone has to register at some adress and it's automatically served there.
The feeling of getting more than Was asked for is a strange one. When my family filed a protection order, our lawyer said "it's limited to x years normally" but then not a single word of time limitations (tough I should inform myself if my kids still fall under it when they soonish become adults)

When I file a protection order against my ex, the sheriff always serves the order in the state of Ohio

In what state? Where I work the protective order is given to the sheriff or local PD to serve to the respondent depending on what the DA filed.

WTF here in au it’s DVO&TDVO (we call them domestic violence orders rather than protection orders) are just served by the police once the court has the paperwork it’s sent over to the police and they do it

Here in Germany, we have a certain way of mailing it that counts as serving. You get an official document too. The mail is either delivered to the person, another adult in the household, or the mailbox via that procedure and it counts as being served. I love that bc it means you don't have to interact with that person

Arizona has system called azpoint ( fill out order take order number to court) if court authorizes as a protective order state/city will serve it // if it is set up as a iah ( injunction against harassment ) the filer has to get their own process server

When I had my protection order granted (filed at 1pm on a week day, was granted AND served before 5pm same day) it was served by my local sheriffs office because of my safety being at risk.
