I’ve owned homes since 1999. My advice is to check with the realtor who helped you buy the house for recommendations for plumbers, HVAC, etc. These contractors will want to keep their relationship with the realtor and normally won’t try to gauge you.

Homeowner tip: That handyman is not only your first call for fixing things, but he’s also your best source of recommendations if you need any other professional. Competent people prefer to work with other competent people, so they know who can be trusted & who can’t, and they won’t ruin their own reputation by giving you bad advice.

That “local company” is most definitely purchased by a PE firm and they probably purchased two others in the area so you would probably get 3 similar quotes. This local handy man is a gem, keep his number close!

A plumber told me we needed to change the pipes for my whole house because the water pressure was going out in my kitchen and bathrooms. I call a friend of friend plumber that man unscrewed all the sink/shower heads...cleaned them. Water pressure restored.

I ALWAYS get 4 quotes. ALWAYS. Then I compare what all 4 told me. I don’t just automatically go with the cheaper option, learned that the hard way. But I do compare if each company told me the same thing. Last time I had 3 tell me the exact same problem and 1 tell me something different from the other 3. So then I cross out that one and then look at the other 3 and decide on price from there. I also look at their reviews.
