I think until someone gives you a reason to not believe them, give them the benefit of the doubt. I think the issue here is that Graham Platner had a lot of red flags but he fundementally championed progressive policies and the alternative to worrying he would turn his back on them is simply believing his opposition would not support progressive policies exactly like they say they wouldn't.
