As a manager, if the supervisor is going to make an exception like this, they better explain to the customer that the employee was 100% correct and the supervisor is choosing to break company policy and bears the responsibility for that.

This happened all the time when I worked in retail. Management would tell us to tell customers this or that, but when the customer would get angry, management would override their own rules just to make me look stupid. 💔💔💔
