@mprnews: On this day 10 years ago, St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop in the Twin Cities suburb of Falcon Heights. His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, was in the passenger seat. Her 4-year-old daughter was in the back. His death sparked protests that became a rallying cry for police reform and led to the first prosecution of a police officer for an on-duty killing in Minnesota history. Since then, Castile’s mother Valerie has worked to honor her son’s memory by speaking out about his killing and joining calls for accountability in policing. She has supported others who lost loved ones to gun violence and raised money to pay off school lunch debt as a tribute to her son, who was the cafeteria supervisor of a St. Paul elementary school. In an interview with Minnesota Now host Nina Moini, Valerie reflected on the decade since her son was killed and the impact his legacy has had on the community. Rest in peace Mr Castile. Your legacy continues. I know you are smiling down at your mom from heaven.
