What We Preach to the World and Practice at Home Written By Kendesi Mohammed Website: www.kendesimohammed.com I watched President Mohamed Irfaan Ali address the United Nations, and I listened carefully. He stood before the world speaking about food security, climate change, global warming, human rights violations, increased military spending, and what the international community should be doing to address these challenges. But it made me ask a very simple question: What about Guyana? There is a contradiction that I believe deserves serious discussion. Our Constitution matters. Our laws matter. And the way Guyana is supposed to be governed matters. Parliament is supposed to provide a place for national issues to be debated and for government to be held accountable. Yet I have concerns about whether Parliament is consistently functioning in the way our democracy requires. I also question the lack of meaningful engagement between the President and the opposition. If we are going to speak to the world about democracy, human rights, accountability and responsible governance, then we should also be willing to look at how those principles are being practiced at home. I believe the United Nations should pay attention to these concerns and examine whether there is a gap between what Guyana’s leadership says internationally and what citizens experience domestically. I have described President Ali’s approach as two faced because, from my perspective, there appears to be a significant difference between the message delivered internationally and the political reality I see in Guyana. That is my opinion, and I believe I have the right to raise the question. I am not asking the United Nations to take sides in Guyana’s politics. I am asking for accountability. If a world leader stands before the United Nations and tells the international community what it should do about human rights, climate change, food security and global responsibility, shouldn’t that same leader be prepared to answer questions about how those principles are being applied in his own country? Leadership is not only about what you say when the world is watching. Leadership is also about what you do when you return home.
