it's been 15 years and it still crosses my mind. you'd be hard pressed to convince me it's not an addiction

it also benefits from the harm-reduction framework. developing strategies to lower the frequency of SH or lower the risk factors associated with it is very useful.

I believe it is 100% possible to be addictive. I am 34–I haven’t done it in ten years but it took intensive therapy to stop. And yet, sometimes I just…. Crave it. That desire never went away.

SH also is like a nervous system reset- it makes sense that its very much attached to addiction because with substance use it changes how ur nervous system is reacting and firing. as someone with both substance abuse addiction and has struggled with SH since very early childhood, that actually makes a lot of sense to me

I thought it had been pretty wildly understood that it was an addiction! I’m glad this is getting more attention

Yep absolutely. I remember using language like “quitting”, “X days clean” and “relapse” when I was trying to stop in highschool because it felt the most relevant

It absolutely is. I’ll have episodes where I’ll be “clean” from sh for weeks or months, only for something to suddenly trigger the urge and I’ll fall back into a relapse again. It’s like a never ending cycle, it’s been off-and-on for nearly five years now.

It breaks my heart how behind research is in this area. late diagnosed audhd, mine defo resembled addiction, I was only able to stop as at the end I was only getting relief when actively doing it and was needing medical intervention. it was incredibly difficult to stop. even 15 years on I still have extremely strong and overwhelming urges when times are bad, despite stopping over a decade ago. To see that 15 years later the research hasn't been done for effective understanding and treatment is heartbreaking. Had I had effective interventions and treatments at 16 before anything had change to become entrenched my life may have turned out different. Even though I had inpatient care my autism, adhd and mecfs were not recognised at the time. Thank you for speaking about this important topic ❤️

I’m 3+ years clean and I still get deep and intense urges that take a lot to shake- I would 1000% consider it possible to be an addiction
