@precioushill_: My advice to new parents of nonverbal children, and maybe even the seasoned ones, the ones with the highest hopes and the biggest fears. It’s completely normal to want your child to be the safe, healthy, smart and everything else under the sun. Every parent wants those things. But don’t let your hope for tomorrow keep you from seeing your child today. Being nonverbal does not mean they are incapable of communicating or living a safe, healthy, meaningful, and productive life. It simply means different. It means they may have to navigate life differently, and that’s okay. I’m not saying you shouldn’t hope for those things, and I’m not saying your child won’t achieve them. I’m saying you have to learn to accept them where they are right now, not just where you hope they’ll be one day. Some of the most beautiful moments with my daughter happened when I stopped measuring her by what she couldn’t do and started appreciating everything she already could. #autism #nonverbal #parents #mom #parenting
