During summer I also add ‘are they in direct sun’ to my mental checklist as they could overheat without realizing. Thank you for posting this.

Keep in mind calling the police on the unhoused often results in them being displaced and doesn’t help- medical services are generally different but try and be situationally aware

I’m a 911 dispatcher in a large city with a large and visible homeless population, and I get a lot of calls about them. I would love to adopt this into a script to speak with callers to help me get the most appropriate response (and without alienating the callers, which can be tough). Thank you so much for sharing!

Im a female paramedic. I may be a first responder but I’m a woman first. I want to help people but I need to remember to help myself first. I can’t put myself in dangerous situations. I will practice these 4 signs and I’ll make the call to fellow first responders to come and help. There is safety in numbers. There is a difference between me going to check on them with my team vs me by myself. My team will help defend each other. It’s important to know your limits and your capabilities.

to everyone in the comments; calling the police should NOT be your first instinct and should always be an absolute last resort if it’s truly blatantly necessary. calling the police in situations like this often does more harm than good.

I’m lucky I’ve never had to personally approach someone who might have OD’d because I would not have known what to do. There are definitely a lot of homeless people in my city, but they tend to sleep in a specific area of the city I don’t frequent a lot. I know we have local groups that do go out to these places to check on people, which is good. I like helping whenever I can (which so far has just been getting people food), but I don’t go out a lot LOL

Thank you for this, as a woman I don’t want to check, but as someone who used to be an emt and on an ambulance these are amazing guidelines to follow

Thank you so much. I was always told not to engage & leave it to the cops because “they could be dangerous” but your videos have been so educational & enlightening. Makes me want to go out and help everyone I see. ❤️‍🩹

As someone who used to be an addict on the streets thank you for doing this. It’s hard not to feel invisible and unwanted out there and seeing someone who give a fuck really matters.

As a woman who always checks on my community members, thank you for sharing safe options for approaching someone who may be in distress. This is a great reminder that our unhoused community members are usually not a danger to us but rather they could be in danger. We as humans need to make it a norm to be there for other humans and remove fear towards the homeless community.
