The story is by no means a good representation of change. A good story about change gives the character a proper punishment for the actions they did, which is why shows like breaking bad and the sopranos is such a good story. Nobody in the story is ever properly held accountable for their actions, even Paul isn't held accountable, it's simply forgive and forget. He is not a good character and not a good representation of change.
