Released in 1996, it was one of the console’s launch titles and marked Mario’s first appearance in fully three dimensional gameplay. Directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential games in video game history for establishing standards in 3D platform design and camera control. The story follows Mario as he arrives at Princess Peach’s castle after receiving an invitation for cake. Upon entering, he discovers that Bowser has taken over the castle and trapped its inhabitants inside magical paintings. Mario must explore the castle’s rooms and worlds to collect Power Stars, defeat Bowser, and rescue Princess Peach. Unlike earlier Mario games with linear stages, Super Mario 64 allows players to freely explore large 3D environments. Each world contains multiple objectives that can be completed in different orders. Mario’s movement system was expanded, introducing abilities such as triple jumps, wall kicks, long jumps, diving, and backflips, giving players greater freedom of movement. The game also introduced a dynamic camera system controlled partly by Lakitu, a cameraman following Mario throughout the adventure. Combined with analog stick controls on the Nintendo 64, this created a more immersive 3D experience. Super Mario 64 was praised for its level design, controls, music, and technical achievements. It became one of the best selling Nintendo 64 games and influenced many later 3D platformers.
