Some children are naturally more even-tempered than others. But patience and emotional regulation aren’t simply personality traits you have or don’t. Self-regulation is a developmental skill. And before children can consistently regulate themselves, they rely on adults to help them regulate. This process is called co-regulation: a calm, responsive adult helps a child move through a difficult emotion until the child gradually becomes better able to do it independently. Parents who help children become patient and calm tend to: 1️⃣ Regulate themselves first. A parent who stays composed during a child’s frustration gives the child an external model of what regulation looks like. 2️⃣ Acknowledge feelings without surrendering boundaries. “You’re angry that we have to leave. It’s okay to be angry. We still need to go.” Children can learn that emotions are acceptable even when every impulse doesn’t get acted upon. 3️⃣ Give children time. Constantly rushing children teaches them that discomfort needs to be escaped immediately. Waiting, taking turns, and tolerating small frustrations provide practice with delaying gratification. 4️⃣ Create predictable routines. Children have an easier time regulating when they aren’t constantly having to figure out what is going to happen next. Predictability reduces unnecessary stress and gives children a structure they can rely on. 5️⃣ When something is difficult, give children enough support to keep trying without taking the problem away from them. Patience grows through repeated experiences of “This is hard, but I can keep going.” Continued in comments
