In 1979, when I was 17, my family gave me an ultimatum to leave because they disapproved of my sexuality. They were extremely unpleasant. I left. 8 years later, after no contact with my entire extended family, they sent me a message saying I would now be permitted to visit the family home, on condition that my sexuality would never be mentioned. I never responded. When they knocked at my door, I didn't answer. We never spoke again. I've never regretted this decision, not once. I have my integrity, I have my peace, and I have a beautiful family I built with worthy people whose love doesn't come with conditions. Always put yourself first.
