If you’re Maay-speaking and you’ve ever used ChatGPT or another AI, you’ve probably noticed something. You type in Af Maay. It replies in Standard Somali. At first, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. But this is how languages slowly disappear from the digital world. AI learns from data. If Af Maay isn’t represented, the model assumes Standard Somali is the “correct” version. Then people begin switching dialects just to communicate with technology. That’s not translation. That’s linguistic replacement. Af Maay isn’t broken Somali. It’s a distinct Somali variety with its own vocabulary, grammar, history, oral traditions, and millions of speakers. If AI can’t understand or generate Af Maay, an entire linguistic heritage becomes less visible online. The future of AI shouldn’t only be multilingual. It should be multidialectal. Because preserving a language isn’t just about words. It’s about preserving a people’s history, identity, and way of seeing the world.
