There's a surprising amount of explanations. When Superman arrives on Earth through the wormhole created by his ship, so did chunks of Krypton and became kryptonite. Imagine if just 2% of Superman's planet came with him? that's still a huge amount, even more when Supergirl came into the picture. Kryptonite can be mined in space and is trafficked to earth by intergalactic Villians for favors. Lex Luthor can synthesize it. Black Mask has a kryptonite trade and rounds up all confiscated Kryptonite and sells it back to those who lost it.

my understanding is it's like diamond or other rare minerals on earth. It's rare sure, but if you blew up the entire planet you'd get a ton of it. Kryptonite was rare on Krypton but not crazy rare and when the planet blew up all those minerals became freely available. That's my understanding at least

Depends on the continuity but kryptonite is usually fragments of the planet Krypton that have become irradiated. Sometimes it followed the escape pods, sometimes there's enough that's around that the geniuses or sciencey people are smart enough to synthesize it.

I always assumed that because krptonite was a mineral that was on Krypton, that a bunch of it was shot into space when it exploded so it’s just scattered all over now. And yes there is lab grown kryptonite

I mean, based on the TV show Smallville they just got that stuff lying around everywhere. It is not hard to come by. I mean the entire planet destructed and then all those asteroids fell to earth. How hard could it be to find one?

Lists of reasons. 1) kryptonite is either a radioactive crystal found in krypton, or it’s all of the remains from the planet blowing up that became radioactive in space so there’s a ton of it since it’s a full planets worth of material. Theres been several times that massive chunks of kryptonite asteroids have reached earth, plus it’s just a material so it’s possible to recreate it in a lab

Lex learned how to synthesize it. In one of the original backstory lex and Superman were friends and lex deconstructed kryptonite and developed a way to stop Clark’s weakness to kryptonite. Long story short Superman accidentally blows up the lab lex was working in and the rest is history.

Kryptonite falls to earth from space like its iron. It's about like finding a flint arrowhead on the ground. It's not common but also you probably know or have known someone with a small arrowhead collection.

I also don't read much Superman but I think it's popularity is a little bit flanderized? Regardless, iirc the remains of Krypton became kryptonite, so there's a decent amount of it

So, it is rare relative to many other fictional minerals but not the rarest by a long shot. There is synthetic green kryptonite that can be produced. However, the reason it pops up in a lot of stories for the Super family is because it’s one of their few weaknesses that villains not on their power level can exploit. Green kryptonite is the most plentiful Kryptonite variant.
