@disagreeableratchild: Like who gets to say their anxious response is more valid and worthy of being humored? I dont like people telling me no, I cant tell people theyre never allowed to tell me no.

Riding horses taught me very quickly that only one of us could panic and it was NEVER my turn.

Being uncomfortable/anxious is not the same as being in danger.

I'm autistic and have social anxiety. Every single teacher let me get away with not doing presentations/public speaking except for one who forced me to do it every week and gave me pointers each time. I'm now amazing at public speaking. It IS true I'm so sorry everyone 😭

As an ex-teacher, I think this starts in school. Example: When kids are supposed to make an oral report and suddenly you get a note from a parent/principal/psychologist that the kids has anxiety about speaking in front of class so to excuse them. Yeah… everyone starts of with public speaking anxiety. You’re SUPPOSED to work through that. It’s part of development.

this, but being on time with adhd. like i fully understand/experience time blindness too (am now medicated), but it is simply an aspect of life you *must* learn to figure out, both in professional & social spaces!!

Somewhere along the way we decided that things being extra difficult for a person is the same thing as something being impossible for that person.

You have to step outside of your comfort zone, as my old First Sergeant used to say all the time.

People don’t realise you can be anxious AND still do things. Sure, it sucks, but otherwise you live your life in a box.

“But it’s uncomfortable and difficult!” So was learning to do literally anything and everything when you were a small child, but here you are able to do all these things 1 year old you couldn’t. Amazing how that happens.

I hate it but exposure therapy is the ONLY thing that makes progress. Talk therapy helps with recovery and thought processes, but you GOTTA DO THE THING

“Your job isn’t to get rid of the anxiety, but to do the thing DESPITE it” - something my therapist said that completely rewired my brain.

Dude, thank you. I detest how so many people talk about anxiety the last few years. This idea that just because something is difficult, that somehow means people shouldn't be expected (even unto themselves) to learn how to navigate

I teach middle school and have to navigate this with parents/students a lot. I think a lot of well-meaning and loving parents enable their kids’ anxiety more than they realize. I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder myself, and I have a lot of empathy for them, but I know firsthand you can’t avoid your way out of anxiety. My class motto is “the only way out is through.”

i got over my phone anxiety by intentionally working at a call center. they taught me exactly how to take a call, the script for each part, the flow chart for every senario. i was exposed to so much phone calls that i have exactly zero problems making or taking phone calls now.

One of my favorite authors once wrote "Fear is a bully. The more you try to appease it, the more it demands, until it rules you completely. The only way to defeat it is to challenge it, and prove your strength is greater, and then it will flee." Changed my life ngl 🥰

being uncomfortable is part of life. pushing through the uncomfortable parts is how you learn and grow. and being uncomfortable or distressed is not the same thing as being traumatized
