always said he didnt care about his birthday, its wasteful to buy gifts etc. I bought tickets to a lantern festival that we didnt end up going to because he didnt want to go. he also opened his gift earlier because he saw it wrapped and didnt want to wait. . next day our building send a happy birthday card and he hung it on the fridge and acted like I was the bad guy for WEEKS. he was just baffled I did "nothing". when I point out i had, he says how I still didnt even get him a cake. mind you he said not to because he was trying to lose weight 🙄

This. 💯 I could never place why it bothered me so much that he says this. You said it. It takes away a very important part of a marriage in sharing emotions. He doesn’t need me for anything because he doesn’t want me to need him for anything. It’s a very lonely life.

The thing is, it’s impossible to even bring this up bc then it’s “oh you just think I’m a horrible person!” In my experience, every single attempt to discuss a way to improve the relationship (in his mind) is just me saying he sucks at life. So I say nothing (it’s been 40 years so I live my own life now)

Yes this makes sense. Then in addition to being "low maintenance," my avoidant is an only child so he basically doesn’t need anyone. He is fine doing everything by himself. Then what exactly is the point of being in a relationship?
