One downside of having a very high internal locus of control is that you can become overly critical—not just of yourself, but of other people. You start thinking, “If I can push through, why can’t they?” or “If they just worked harder, they’d succeed too.” But the truth is, not everyone starts from the same place. People have different circumstances, opportunities, responsibilities, and struggles that we can’t always see. Taking responsibility for your own life is a strength. But assuming everyone has the same level of control over their circumstances can make you less empathetic and more judgmental. The goal isn’t to have a completely internal or completely external locus of control—it’s knowing when to take ownership, and when to recognize that some things really are outside a person’s control.
