Here I’m clearly talking about picky eating - not meals that are new to the child or foods they genuinely don’t like, which would be perfectly normal ! Here’s what I personally do in situations like this and what has worked for us (18months +) : 1. Calmly take the meal away and offer nothing else. No rescue food. Your child shouldn’t see or understand that this bothers you, because they may start doing it on purpose! So always stay calm and neutral. You don’t want to eat? - Fine! Let’s go play. You’re hungry? Sorry, sweetheart, this is the only food we have right now! 1. Offer the same meal again after 1–1.5 hours. No insisting or pressure. Ideally, wait at least 1 hour and (preferably) for your child to say or show you that they’re hungry. Then offer the same food again (on a different plate) without pointing out that it’s the same meal. Let them deal with what’s in front of them on their own, without insisting or putting pressure on them. 1. If they refuse again, offer another nutritious meal you know they’ll eat. If they refuse again, stay calm and act like nothing happened. Just say, “Okay — how about some [savory food you know they’ll eat]?” In our case, that could be a boiled egg. Definitely no favorite foods, sweets, or fruit. Forget about sweets and fruit completely if they don’t eat their main meal - otherwise, they may think they’re being rewarded for being picky! 1. No snacks until the next main meal, which again should be savory. Feeling a little hungry is not concerning or unhealthy at all! It’s okay for them to skip the snack this time and wait until the next main meal. They’ll understand that there isn’t another option and that the main meal is actually what satisfies their hunger - not the snack! 5. Repeat these steps thru the day, except dinner (retry after only 30 mins.) When dinner comes, if they refuse that too, you can do the same thing and calmly suggest that they get down from the table, or simply take the plate away and say, “Maybe you’re not hungry right now and you’d rather eat later.” However, make the break only 30 minutes this time, not longer. You don’t want to feed your child too close to bedtime or, even worse, have them go to bed hungry! Remember: - Our children eat what we offer, not whatever they choose. - A child is picky because we allow it, not because “that’s just how they are” #mom #momlife #toddler #parents #blw
