@thecareerdecoded: This question isn’t just about your short tenure. It’s about your decision-making. Hiring managers are asking themselves: • Is this a one-time situation or a pattern? • Did they give the role enough time? • Did they make an impact before deciding to leave? • How will they speak about their current employer? General rule of thumb, I recommend staying in a role for at least two years. It gives you time to build a track record, make meaningful contributions, and demonstrate commitment. There are legitimate exceptions. If you leave sooner, how you communicate it matters. It could cost you the job. What NOT to say: • “My boss is toxic.” • “My manager is a micromanager.” • “The culture is terrible.” • “ too much politics” Instead, focus on the business reason for your move. 1: Change in senior leadership “Shortly after I joined, there was a significant change in senior leadership that shifted the direction of the role. After giving it time, I realized it was no longer aligned with the opportunity I originally accepted.” 2. Reduction in force: “The company went through a reduction in force that significantly changed the structure of the team and my long-term growth opportunities. I’m now looking for a role where I can continue to grow and make a lasting impact.” 3. The role changed: “The position evolved into something very different from what was discussed during the interview process. Due to changes in the business and a lack of infrastructure, my day-to-day responsibilities no longer align with the role I accepted.” 4. Long-term fit: “After gaining firsthand experience in the role, I realized it isn’t the best long-term fit for my skills and career goals. Rather than waiting, I’m being intentional about pursuing an opportunity that’s a better long-term match.” If you’re leaving after only a few months, be prepared for follow-up questions. The hiring manager may ask: • What have you accomplished in those seven months? • What did you do to try to improve the situation? • What makes you confident this opportunity is different? • Why do you believe this role is a better long-term fit? Your goal isn’t to defend your short tenure. Your goal is to demonstrate thoughtful decision-making, professionalism, and a clear business reason for making the move. That’s the only way to get a significant raise these days. 3% ain’t going to cut it.

I wish we’d just normalise the fact that sometimes you just apply for a new job because you want more money. Why do we have to do this dance of pretending you’re applying for this role because it’s always been your dream to manage project for a multinational corporation?

Because a company recruited me and announced layoffs when I had been there exactly 1 month. Sometimes it's not my decision

The best way to flip this question is focusing on growth alignment, not escaping a bad situation. A solid script: 'I achieved my initial launch goals ahead of schedule, but I quickly realized the ceiling for long-term project ownership was limited. I'm looking for a place where I can anchor and build for the next 3–5 years.'

If you are losing people that quickly, 99% of the time, the issue is one of two things: insufficient pay compared to the workload, or poor management. If companies would stop pretending those aren't the two biggest problems, and would fix them, they wouldn't be suffering retention issues to anywhere near the same degree. And until y'all grow up, and accept that fact, there's no conversation to be had. You can't ask people what the problem is, deny that it is what they say it is, and still expect to hang on to people. That's simply not how it works. Ever.

Pfff please some places over sell and under deliver and staying two years is a waste of time. If company was making a decision to terminate they wouldn’t be giving it two years either

I plan to apply for a new job and am nervous to say why I am leaving. I’m basically the HR, Payroll, Office Manager among other roles, and only make $22.50. Now, I don’t want to say that I am doing too many things, I love to stay busy, but I don’t want to come across as I can’t handle doing more than one thing.

giving blanket advice to stay in a role for at least 2 years is based on the old paradigm of work culture and systems that are becoming more clearly dysfunctional for the majority of the western workforce. each person's situation and needs are unique and this thought process of linear career trajectories is based upon an old idea of career growth that is quickly becoming less relevant in today's career ecosystem. my advice: follow what you know and believe is best for your situation, your well-being, and the well-being of anyone dependent on the wages you receive from said job. companies are not people, and this idea that we should have hidden expectations to be loyal to an organization for x amount of time to maintain hireable optics is as shaky as the very systems and collective agreements they rely upon. much of the younger generations are already aware of this, and are already opting out of the hoop jumping games that sacrifice their happiness, authenticity, and health for the disappearing promise of stability and security.

9 months into my last job, got an interview through an external recruiter, joined the interview and the hiring manager asked if I recognized her name (she was the previous manager at the company I was currently at before I got there) and she immediately says “I’m not even going to ask why you’re looking, I think I know why, I know you can do the work, I just want to make sure we had a vibe check” needless to say I took the job because her and the cfo gave me all the reassurance I needed that my previous role was not good for me and have given me nothing but confidence
