I’m a T7 complete paraplegic, meaning I have no movement or feeling below my chest. Despite that, I live a very active and independent life. I work full-time, 8 hours a day, and I train at the gym five days a week. Today, I hit chest during my lunch break — a solid workout — but now I’m dealing with intense leg spasms and stiffness, which happens sometimes. Spasms are a common part of life with a spinal cord injury. They’re caused by disrupted communication between the brain and body, so muscles fire off uncontrollably. For me, they can be triggered by a tough workout, sitting too long, or even just my body reacting to something I can’t feel. While the spasms can be frustrating and even painful, they’re also a sign that my nervous system is still active — just not in the way I want. I manage this through stretching, staying hydrated, and listening to my body. It’s all about balance. I push hard in the gym and at work, but I also pay attention to what my body needs.
