@steadystateparent: Last night i broke down in front of my husband and said something i’ve never admitted out loud: I wish we could go back to before we had our second baby. The second the words left my mouth, the shame hit. Instant. Overwhelming. Like I’d said the one thing a “good mom” isn’t supposed to feel, let alone say. I braced for him to be hurt, or confused, or to try to fix it. Instead, he just… normalized it. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t try to talk me out of the feeling. He basically told me that of course this is hard, of course there are moments you grieve the family you had before, and that doesn’t mean you don’t want the family you have now. And honestly? That response did more for me than any amount of “you’re a great mom” ever could have. Because here’s what I’ve learned, both as a mom of two and as a licensed therapist who’s sat with so many moms in this exact season: the shame isn’t usually about the feeling itself. It’s about believing you’re the only one who feels it. And it was true… I didn’t actually want to go back. I wanted a break, I wanted more simplicity in our life in that moment, I wanted support. And I knew without a shadow of a doubt how much I loved my son. How much I wanted him. How much I needed him. But the tears, the overwhelm, the feeling of failure came anyway because of the shame. So many moms have thought this exact thought…wishing for the before, missing the version of life that existed before another kid changed everything, and never said it out loud. Not to their partner. Not to their friends. Not even fully to themselves. Because we’ve built a culture where admitting ambivalence about motherhood feels like admitting failure. It’s not failure. It’s honest. And the more of us who say it, the less power the shame has over the next mom who’s about to have this exact thought at 11pm and think she’s the only one. You are not the only one who’s felt this. Say it here, in the comments, so the next mom scrolling by at midnight knows it too. #perinatalmentalhealth #postpartumjourney #postpartumsupport #postpartum #motherhoodunfiltered

I am so happy to see I’m not the only one with these thoughts. My son is 3.5 and he’s having the worst time adjusting to his new sister 2mo being here. Before she came we were working on potty training and now he doesn’t want to do it he refuses to wear his underwear and has regressed so much. He also acts out and no matter what I do nothing helps. I feel so guilty for having another baby because to him we don’t have our time anymore. I’ve been so emotional about it I kept thinking about before when it was just him and I going on errands, eating together, I feel like I failed him.

My first was really hard.. she had a dairy allergy we didn’t know about, she screamed and cried all the time and one night I broke down and said “I wish we never had a baby” I still think about that and she’s 3 now and the sweetest girl.. sometimes we break and that’s okay. Being a parent isn’t easy but I’m glad your husband is supportive and helpful in the tough situations like that.. that’s what helped me as well ❤️

I didn’t say it, but I’ve had this exact thought a few times in the last three months with our second born. It does make me feel like a bad mom, but I just miss those days with our first born

My baby is teething and I’m having a terrible time. I cried on the bathroom floor last night begging for him to stop crying and how badly I just wanted to sleep again. And then immediately felt guilty. This chat thread has made me feel not alone. Thank you.

I said those same words, “I just want to take her back to the hospital” I can still hear the sob that left me after I said those words. Being a mom is so hard, being a mom to two littles is soooo hard. The guilt that you have for your first, the guilt you have for your second because they didn’t get the same mom the first got 😭😭😭

Just had my first baby. Don’t have a single family member or friend around as we moved. My 3 week old never sleeps and nurses what feels like every second of the day and then of course doesn’t sleep at night. My husband works the entire day as a resident doctor. I find myself having a mental breakdown everyday like this. these comments are reassuring. No one even reaches out to ask how we’re doing.

I feel like we should be able to say and feel things that aren’t what a “good mom” would think without the shame or guilt in a way. Sometimes it is SO hard and heavy and we just need a moment to vent to come out of it.

As a mom of 3… the second is SSOOOOO hard. Better days are ahead. Your baby is loved and you’re allowed to have hard moments

My second baby is 2 months old and he is so much harder than my now 17 month old was. I feel this way often. Obviously I love my son, but sometimes I wonder if I made a mistake. Then the shame and guilt eat me alive. It’s helpful to know that other second time moms feel this way too.

Yes…. We had such a easy baby with our first. My son 18 months and he wakes up every night 2-3 hrs after being put to bed and we can’t figure out why. He will have good nights and others are not so good. We tried everything….

Thank you for this. I love my daughter more than anything and I am beyond blessed to have her, but with my son is just so damn difficult. He's 2 and a half so he's still a baby himself and he's trying to adapt to having a sibling but understandably struggles at times. I do miss the times with him before pregnancy. It was just us against the world...

I feel like such a bad mom when I think this… My son is 11 and our life was super simple and chill… Then I had my daughter 10 months ago.. It’s been chaos and it’s a struggle for sure 🥺

I have a step son that is turning 18 and a daughter that is turning 1. And the truth is that this was the only way I could have 2 kids cause I can't go through pregnancy again and I can't imagine the difficulty of having two young children. Parents with multiple young children are freaking SELFLESS humans , absolutely incredible people!! You're a slay girlll!!

Im a ftm with a velcro baby who also bedshare and its hard. We got married in august and i got pregnant in our honeymoon. Our whole marriage has been so different from what we are so used to. I see how my husband gets so sad at the end of each day when I just want to sleep at 8pm bc i have to get up at 6am and work on the house around the baby’s schedule (im a SAHM) and he has to work 12hrs a day. I wish i could be his wife so bad, i miss him so much we try to spend time together but we have our son in the middle always hahaha we still dont feel comfortable leaving our baby in the care of others yet. Its heartbreaking but I wouldnt have it any other way our son is a blessing we know its just a season and will end soon.

My 2 1/2 year old has had some regression with her new sister coming home. I know it will get better but there's still days I feel so bad like I ruined her life by making her share my attention now.

everyone was upset that I would get frustrated because my baby wouldn’t sleep at all. I was overwhelmed and exhausted I only sleep for an hour and no one knows I cry every night because I never felt so alone and sometimes I tell myself I don’t wanna do this anymore and I felt so guilty feeling that way or thinking that way because I would look at my baby and think to myself she’s so beautiful 😭
