@threadofeverything: Parables pt 1 - Jesus almost never answers the question "what is the kingdom of heaven." He deflects, every time, into "the kingdom is like" a seed, a woman hiding yeast, a merchant, a shepherd out looking for one sheep (Matthew 13). Why hide the most important thing he came to say behind a story about ordinary stuff? Because the kingdom of heaven is not a place. It is a Person. An early teacher named Origen had a word for it, autobasileia, the kingdom-in-person: Jesus said "he himself is the kingdom," just as he is wisdom and justice and truth. So "the kingdom is like a pearl" was Jesus telling you, quietly, in the third person, "I am the treasure worth everything." Origen said outright that the one pearl of great price is "the Christ of God, the Word" (Matthew 13:45-46). And when the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and carries the lost one home on his shoulders, Gregory the Great heard the incarnation itself, God taking on our human nature and carrying our sins on his own back. This is the Church's oldest way of reading these stories, not a new theory. And here is the honest part: the key turns a little differently in each parable. Some are him painting his own portrait. Some are the King coming back to settle accounts. And some, like the good Samaritan, are a mirror showing you how to live. This is part one.
