I bought a copy of Le Petit Prince that had French on one side and English on the other and would read just the French side unless I was completely lost. It did wonders for my comprehension.

i kinda did that too, but it's a bit dangerous, because literary french is different from normal french and normal french is different from spoken french. i could read at a very high level but understood almost no actual spoken french and couldn't really produce natural conversational phrases. kind of a different skill to master in my opinion that reading alone will not teach you

Yes! I read L’Etranger really early on, right after reading Harry Potter 1 in translation. It felt so grown up but was accessible.
