The majority of all PlayStation games are in disc format, at least for the bigger titles like God of War and Final Fantasy tier. Ofc smaller named games as well. However, the main difference from previous generations of PlayStation consoles and now is that back then the game could be directly read from the disc and played immediately. It didn't need to be installed. Now for the current generation which the game data is on the disc but due to read speeds being inadequate, the game disc is now an installation disc. It's no different than a disc PC game now where you popped in the disc, clicked install, and now the game is being installed on the PC. No Sony will not render these games inoperable that do not require any internet unless they want to break major consumer laws.
