It took me more than two months of research to study the types, forms, colors, and patterns of traditional women’s costumes from across the archipelago from Sabang to Merauke. This also included tracing and documenting traditional attire that is no longer in use, to ensure it is preserved in this post. Traditional costumes of the Nusantara are portraits of the nation’s historical journey. From Sabang to Merauke, each garment was born from a fusion of nature, cultural values, and encounters with the outside world. In the beginning, simple clothing made from tree bark was worn in many regions. Over time, weaving skills evolved.. transforming natural fibers into woven cloth, and later shifting to cotton and silk, which arrived through global trade routes, including the Silk Road. With the arrival of Islam, women’s clothing in many areas began to change: styles that were once open or even topless gradually disappeared, replaced by more modest attire. From this emerged a new harmony, blending ancient traditions with religious values introduced from outside. The Kebaya Kutubaru, now recognized as the national costume of Indonesian women, is itself a product of long cultural exchange shaped by local traditions, enriched with Chinese influences through silk and motifs, and touched by Arab culture that brought the concept of modesty in dress. Every fold of fabric, every motif, and every accessory in Nusantara attire bears witness to the world’s grand interactions: trade routes, the spread of religions, and cultural exchanges. This proves that traditional clothing in the archipelago has never been static, but continuously evolved without ever losing its identity. #fyp #southeastasia #indonesia #thailand🇹🇭 #xyzbca
