Oh my goodness this explains when I saw the moon from my Dad's car as a kid in the 1990s. It was HUGE like a film and I looked it up and it wasn't logged anywhere as a special event but I know what I saw. You've just solved a 30yr mystery!

I think it's because a very large object in the distance loses very little relative size from the perspective shift of walking back and forth or driving normal speeds, when compared to the much smaller objects that are much closer and have a much greater scale change relative to the viewer. simply when an object is really big in the background and you have much smaller things between you and it, when you move making the things close to you get smaller the big thing in the background doesn't change as much proportionally.

My assumption is based on the fact that we cannot physically determine distance anywhere from a hundred meters to infinity. Therefore, from an evolutionary standpoint, the brain prefers the assumption that an object is just a hundred meters away (and if we move away while the object stays in place, it means it is approaching). It ignores the possibility that the object is kilometers away because, in that case, if we happen to be wrong, we aren't in any real danger
