What happens when a monumental building burns down—but the knowledge needed to rebuild it was never fully captured on paper? At the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda, generations of Baganda craftspeople developed an extraordinary architectural tradition using wooden poles, reeds, wattle, earth and enormous thatched roofs. At the heart of the complex stands Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga, the burial place of four Kabakas, or kings of Buganda. Then, in 2010, fire devastated the main tomb building. Reconstruction required more than modern architectural plans. It required people who still carried the traditional knowledge of how the structure was made. Experienced craftspeople worked alongside younger generations, passing down specialized skills such as Ganda thatching. Kasubi challenges two assumptions at once: that monumental architecture must be built from stone, and that knowledge must be written down to be sophisticated. Sometimes knowledge survives in hands, memories and techniques passed from one generation to another. Sometimes the blueprint isn’t on paper.
