To me, Marangu is the most developed village among all villages around Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike other villages of Kilimanjaro, Marangu seems to be more accessible, I mean you can go to kilema, Mwika, Rombo,himo, and Marangu gate, unlike other villages where only one road is tarmac that is heading to the gate of Mount Kilimanjaro. Before 1951, a unified Chagga nation didn't exist—just rival chiefdoms fighting for control. But everything changed when Mangi Mkuu Thomas Lenana Marealle II of Marangu was elected as the first and only paramount chief of all the Chagga people. For 11 years, he ran a unified mountain state, bringing massive upgrades to schools and the iconic coffee trade before the chiefdom system ended in 1962.
