Your math is off. I graduated in 1990. Living in LA, I had a $600 1 bedroom apartment. Gas and food was cheap. I was making about 50k mid to late 90’s. You could fill a whole grocery cart for $100 even 15 years ago. Problem now is that wages have been stagnant. Full time jobs have been replaced with 2 part time jobs. Work doesn’t give insurance anymore. Rent is astronomical. It was a lot easier to live in the 90’s. However there were less expenses.

I’d want to know the median salary and range and compare to the average to consider this. America also experienced a boom in upper and upper middle class wealth in the last few decades.

I'm making more than my dad did when I was 10. I don't own a house or 3 Mercedes. It is not the same.

Your numbers don't work. I have a 26 and a 28 year old sons. They make in you 85,000 range. House with taxes and insurance $1000, car insurance on 2 cars $250, groceries family of 3 $350, daycare $800 a month, 2 car payments $500, gas $150. Zero student loans because they listened to me and went to trade school, insurance through work is $400 a month. $3450 plus their wife's work. Take home is about $4500 plus wives income. They are doing fine. It's about making good decisions.
