Hiking poles are useless and a waste of money. Personally I have the urge and a mission during the hike to find the best fitting walking stick

knowledge is the only survival tool that takes up zero space in your pack.

I am a seventy/year-old woman. I teach a seven week backpacking course each spring. I have gone ultra light. Doing this allows me to continue backpacking for maybe another 10 years. I am not lacking for anything. I have a full first aid kit. Extra clothes for warmth in the night along with the scarf , beanie, and socks. I have cut ounces here and there and everywhere and that is what has made my pack light. I also dehydrate all my own food so I don’t have all that heavy Mylar packaging to carry in and carry out. I changed out a few things and has made all the difference in the world to I can now backpack for 4-5 days with only 20 to 22 pounds even with a bear canister/vault.

Never forget that it’s perfectly ok to stop and take a minute. Unless you’re training, no one cares how long the hike took you. Don’t overexert yourself on the way up and then you’re a worthless mass on the way back down

Intermediate hiker here! My 2 cents are never forget to pack a first aid kit! And I don't mean the little white plastic box type of first aid kit. I'm talking more along the lines of what you'd find in an IFAK. Israeli bandages, hemostatic gauze, tournequet, splints, gloves, trauma shears, emergency blanket, poncho, medicine, etc. Hiking can be dangerous, even more so if you're not prepared. Side note of you hike with a dog to make sure you have a kit for your pup too!

An alternative regarding footwear: waterproof socks! Wear some nice breathable shoes that’ll quickly dry out and waterproof socks prevent your feet getting nasty.

Hiking poles are gearhead overkill for most hikers - they can be useful for people with some types of disabilities.

Real. My work is essentially paid to hike, orienteering, safety and having the stamina and knowledge to know how to pace yourself, and simply know when to sit down for a minute! Saves lives. Our packs are 40 lbs at the beginning of the day, they weigh over 50lbs by the end due to sample collection even though we’ve drank almost all our water. Other tips not mentioned here, be open and honest with your crew! If you are tired, if your legs cannot go on, if you fell or tripped, if you are uneasy about a terrain type for whatever reason, if there tension from something, if you’re drinking your water real quick or are nearly out, SAY SOMETHING please please please don’t just keep it to yourself. It’s a quick way to run into trouble or at least asking for it. Don’t be afraid to say no, but also don’t be afraid to learn something new, you never know how that skill will help you in the future! Especially out in the middle of nowhere, it can be scary but it’s so rewarding when you finish that hike, you can always try it again, but you have to return safely first. Sometimes, it is just about getting one foot in front of the other, not back to camp, not back to the boat, just focusing on the present ❤️

Saw someone say if you even for a second feel a hot spot take the time to do what you need to to fix it. Stop the blister wayyyy ahead of time.

Leather boots are the best of both worlds. I've used my Meindl Guffert from 40c in Namibia to -30 in Finland and my feet were always at a comfortable temperature and I can easily walk through rivers up to my ankles without getting wet feet

Water does you zero good in the water bottle in a situation where you’re running out. You’re better off drinking it

My number 1 top tip for hiking A proper hiking whistle its non-negotiable safety essential that must be pealess (without a moving ball) so it never jams or freezes. I whistle with a high decibels carry’s way further in any weather than the human voice.

I understand I’m an outlier but 3 hikes across the US and I’ve never used a set of trekking poles. I can’t tell you how many people told me I wouldn’t finish my hikes without them 🤣

Paper maps and a compass - all the way!! What’s with the kids these days and their digital maps, extra power banks. Surely that’s heavy and vulnerable. 👵 is there an advantage I’m not seeing?

I'm not the fittest hiker ever (far from it) but being sensible and planning ahead (and using walking poles) more than makes up for it. Also learn the difference between needing water and needing fuel. You can think you need water when fruit is far more beneficial.
