Prabowo & Megawati’s Secret Deal & Nasi Goreng. That’s not just a headline, it’s a window into one of the most important political relationships in Indonesia. Many people think Prabowo Subianto and Megawati Soekarnoputri are rivals. And sure, they’ve backed different candidates, clashed over big moments, and run against each other’s coalitions. But the real story? It’s more complicated and more revealing. Their relationship spans decades, built on political moves, mutual respect, personal alliances and yes, a famous plate of Nasi Groeng. In Indonesia, political divides usually don’t mean deep ideological battles. Parties are shaped more by personalities and patronage than by fixed platforms. So alliances can shift. Old enemies become partners. And past betrayals are often quietly forgiven if the power math adds up. Even with PDI-P sitting outside the government, Megawati is still incredibly influential. Her party holds almost 19% of seats in parliament, giving her enduring influence, especially with Jokowi’s political machine still active. If Prabowo wants to shift that balance and strengthen his position, strengthening his relationship with Megawati is one way to do it. But not everyone should be inside the government coalition tent. A healthy democracy needs voices on the outside to question, challenge, and keep the executive in check. Having Megawati and PDI-P join the coalition might work politically for both sides, but it would also mean that every major party is inside. That’s not always a good thing. Keeping some distance doesn’t always mean opposition. It can preserve independence, sharpen oversight, and keep both sides politically credible. We’re only 7 months into Prabowo’s administration. In Indonesia, the first cabinet of a new presidency is usually about rewarding coalition partners and creating stability. The real shake up comes later, often around the one-year anniversary (October 2025). That’s when presidents consolidate power, tighten control, and install long-term loyalists. And if we see an invitation for a home-cooked plate of Nasi Goreng, we may see a shift in Indonesia’s political landscape. #indonesia #prabowo #indonesian #politik #sejarah
