The defense for a former South Carolina gas station owner accused of murdering a teenager focuses on the 9 mm gun the boy had when he was shot. Jurors on Thursday (May 28) saw an image of Cyrus Carmack-Belton holding the firearm with a light illuminating his hair. It was a screenshot from a video he posted on Instagram a day before he went inside a Shell gas station convenience store in Columbia and fled after being accused of stealing bottled water. Store owner Rick Chow is charged with murder for fatally shooting Cyrus after he and his son, Andy, ran after him. Andy Chow testified Cyrus pointed a gun at him, and he told police shortly after the shooting that he'd pulled a gun. Other witnesses, however, say the boy never displayed the gun and looked frightened as he tried to flee the Chows. Prosecutors say Cyrus never pointed the gun at anyone and that Rick Chow shot him maliciously. Chow, 61, has been in jail since his arrest on May 29 2023. Closing arguments in his trial are scheduled for Monday morning in Richland County Circuit Court in Columbia. His lawyer Shaun Kent questioned Taima Jordan, a retired Richland County Sheriff's Office investigator, about Cyrus' gun and the Instagram image in cross-examination. "You discovered that he had possessed that exact firearm within 24 hours of this incident?" Kent asked. "It appeared to be the same gun, yes," Jordan answered. "Through the course of your investigation, do you not find it strange, weird, peculiar that on the day before this, or within 24 hours, this is posted, and then it goes into the store? Through your investigation?" Kent asked. "He shouldn't have had a gun, period," Jordan answered. Andy Chow "made a determination that he believed that Cyrus was stealing from the store." "And then you went and looked back and forth at that video, and it appeared as though nothing had been stolen," Kent said. "That is correct," Jordan said. "And that he was putting water back and forth, but it did not appear that he had stolen something," Kent said. "That is true," Jordan said.
