I’m British living in Düsseldorf and I love it! The quality of life is ASTONISHING. Instead of getting an Interrail pass which is good for exploring multiple countries, make sure you get the Deutschland ticket which gives you access to all public transport in the country (except ICE trains) for the calendar month. For me, Germany has the easiest public transport of any place I’ve ever been, but if you have any questions, almost everyone speaks English! Perhaps you won’t want to use the time to see butterflies here, but there are so many species which we don’t have in the UK which are worth seeing like the Lessee Purple Emperor, Poplar Admiral, Map, Apollo, Camberwell Beauty and so many more 😊

I recommend the "Deutschland-Ticket" wich costs 63 Euros for the calendar month. It allows you to take every kind of public transport in the whole country (except for long-distance highspeed trains).

Im from West Germany and I’m also really into castles and beautiful historic architecture. I recommend visiting the Drachenburg in Königswinter, Burg Eltz in Wierschem and Schloss Augustusburg and Falkenlust in Brühl. The cologne cathedral is also worth visiting. I live in the south west of Germany. Most people speak basic English (especially in the cities) and public transport is pretty easy to figure out with Google Maps. I recommend visiting Cologne and maybe Heidelberg if you‘re in the area. Feel free to let me know if I can help you in any way when the time comes 💕

I used to live close to the border with Germany (I'm from The Netherlands), but in my experience a lot of people speak English as a second language. Google Maps can be a huge help when it comes to public transport as well!

I’m an Australian and my extended family are German. I visited my relatives in Germany years ago and found almost everyone (especially younger people) spoke flawless English, so the “language barrier” was almost non-existent. Germany is a beautiful country inhabited by friendly and welcome people - you’ll love it. I wish you all the best on your trip to honour your uncle!

Just one thing: travel insurance is a must and especially after Brexit! Germany is a lovely place and if you go outside the holiday season, you can stay in the most beautiful place very affordably. It is a very big country and there is so much to see, so best advice is to pick one region and focus on that ✨
