@tokyo.campervans: Millions of years ago this was the ocean floor. Today it is one of Japan's most scenic drives. 🇯🇵 This is Shikoku Karst - the Switzerland of Japan. A highland plateau stretching 25 km along the Ehime and Kochi border at elevations between 1,300 and 1,700 meters. One of Japan's three major karst landscapes and one of its officially recognized 100 most scenic roads. The white limestone rocks covering the plateau were once part of an ancient coral reef. Tectonic plate movement pushed the ocean floor straight up into the sky over millions of years - and thousands of years of rain and wind carved the landscape into what it is today. We drove here by campervan and stayed overnight. Waking up to a sea of clouds sitting below the plateau was genuinely one of the most spectacular moments of our entire Shikoku road trip. And the Shikoku Karst cows roaming freely across the highland? Nobody warned us about them. Easily the best surprise of the whole experience.
