Better to build a few more refineries here than pipelines.

Yes this will be good for Canada, seeing that the average Canadian wants to lessen the reliance of American financial influence.
But this will be, if it does succeed with both pipelines, at least a decade away.
Who knows what influence oil will have in 10 to 15 years.
Also by then, most likely California and Maine and Greenland will be part of Canada... voluntarily.

The billions of dollars and decades to make this happen are mind blowing! I just dont understand why not go up to Churchill Manitoba (closer) and build a couple of icebreakers for the winter?

It’s not the same oil and that’s why it’s cheaper.

These pipelines actually haven’t been announced. What has been announced is for the west coast pipeline an advancement proposal with no private sector financing in place. The pipeline to Ontario is a feasibility study.

The ONLY benefit to Canada or the producing provinces is in royalties and taxes. The oil, once it’s extracted, belongs to oil companies NOT the country or province.

As a Canadian, I would gladly trade off higher gas prices for less dependence on refined oil from US and elsewhere. Canada should 100% work towards energy self sufficiency.

Alberta to Ontario oil line would help with independence because current line that goes to Sarnia passes through the US and Michigan has been trying to close it for a while now. However, they would need to expand the refineries to refine the oil - they already process everything they get.

The line that would run parallel to Transmountain will be built. They no the geotechnical stuff already, the negotiations will be easier because they’ve gone thru this already, bc govt does not oppose it, etc. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
