@purelychickens: Sand or wood chips? 🤔 The answer depends on your run & what you prefer as a cleaning method. 🐔 Sand works best when your run has a roof to keep rain out. When it’s dry, it’s easy to scoop like a giant litter box. You never have to shovel out all out and replace it, so if you don’t like heavy work a few times a year, sand is a good option. 🌿 Wood chips are better for uncovered runs. They handle rain much better, break down naturally over time, help reduce mud, and encourage chickens to scratch and forage. But, under a roof, they get very smelly, need shoveled out more often, and create lots of mold. The best bedding isn’t about what’s “best” overall—it’s about choosing what works for your setup. What do you use in your chicken run? Sand, wood chips, or something else? Let us know in the comments! #backyardchickens #chickens #chickenkeeping #chickensand #chickencoop

I have a roofed run and I use cypress and it works really great. Dries out and composts well/ no smell. No bumble foot. I think it’s mainly maintenance no matter what you use. 🥰 I’ve always been curious about the scoop-ability of sand. Seems nice!

I am in a non stop bumblefoot battle. My sand is clean. I use lime. I use 2x4 roosting bars. I see nothing rough. What am I missing.

how deep is the sand in your run because any time I try to add dirt or wood chips in my chicken run they just dig straight to the ground and shove it all to one side

I find so many videos about the run flooring but I can’t find anything to help with in the coop flooring to help keep moisture down and help with the smell 😔
