I understand why fans get excited by marquee signings, but building a successful team isn’t about collecting the biggest names. Manchester United have invested in a recruitment structure that includes data analysts, scouts and recruitment specialists whose job is to identify players that fit the manager’s playing style, the club’s long-term strategy and the available budget. The goal should be to find the right players, not simply the most famous ones. I’d much rather see United sign talented, hungry players who genuinely want to wear the badge than overpay for established stars whose main motivation is a bigger pay cheque or reputation. Many of the best teams in Europe have been built by signing players before they became global superstars. Smart recruitment, clear planning and financial discipline are far more sustainable than chasing headlines in every transfer window. If the recruitment team consistently identifies players who fit the system, have the right mentality and represent good value, I’m happy to trust that process—even if some of the names aren’t familiar today. Tomorrow’s “big names” are often the players that smart clubs discovered before everyone else.
